Drivers lead local tree planting activity

by Jerome Carlo R. Paunan

CALOOCAN CITY, Jan. 22 (PIA) -- A multi-sectoral group, composed mainly of public transport drivers from Barangay 176 Bagong Silang, on Saturday led a local tree planting activity in the city in line with the National Greening Program (NGP) of the Aquino administration.

At least 300 members of Pamato-Pilipinas Public Transport, Green Revolution Organization, senior citizen associations, barangay officials and grade school students spent their early Saturday morning planting some 400 seedlings of fruit bearing and ornamental trees in Brixtonville Subdivision, Camarin.

According to Pamato-Pilipinas and Green Revolution concurrent president Roman Domasig Jr., the tree planting in Brgy. 175 is the first activity initiated by their group with help from the DENR, MMDA and PIA in compliance to the NGP mandate.

Domasig said their group targets to plant additional trees in public lands in the entire Metro Manila for this year.

"As our own contribution to save the environment, Pamato-Pilipinas, Green Revolution and residents launched this local tree planting project in partnership with government and private organizations," he said in his speech before they formally started their activity.

Earlier, Domasig entered into an agreement with the DENR to provide them the needed seedlings for their continuing project.

He said their group would also involve the participation of other organizations to ensure the realization of the NGP.

Under the National Greening Program, stakeholders are aiming to plant some 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of public lands all over the country to help mitigate the worsening effect of climate change. (RJB/JCP-PIA NCR)
