PIA Press Release Sunday, January 22, 2012 Bureau of Soils cites mining firm’s social responsibility effortsPALO, Leyte, Jan. 22 (PIA) -- The Bureau of Soils and Water Management lauded the NICUA Corporation and the Leyte Irons and Corporation for its programs and initiatives that will benefit the communities and local government units of the municipality of MacArthur, Leyte where it is conducting mining activities.BSWM’s Mercedes Fernando particularly referred to the firm’s promotion of organic farming through the production of trichoderma harzianum, a fungus that catalyzes decomposition of organic materials especially rice straw. Fernando said the Bureau of Soils is impressed on what the company is doing to rehabilitate the mined-out areas in MacArthur, the efforts to increase rice production and the efforts to bring back the land from mining to agriculture. She revealed that BSWM will give the farmers P1.39-million assistance through the local government of MacArthur. Fernando, together with several officials of the Department of Agriculture, recently visited the mining area in MacArthur and saw for herself the rehabilitation efforts being conducted in the area. NICUA’s resident Mine Manager Elmer Ragas informed that NICUA successfully constructed in December of 2011, the Region’s first trichoderma laboratory for Madig-on Farmers Association in MacArthur, Leyte. The firm distributed certificates to farmers who were trained on expanded, modified and rapid composting technology. During the visit, Raagas distributed bags of organic rice that was harvested from the first cropping of the rehabilitated mining areas. Engr. Nonita Caguiua of the MGB-8 said that the accomplishments made by the mining company and the benefits attained by the communities are the result of the collective efforts and dedication of all the stakeholders. For his part, MGB-8 Director Roger de Dios said he is glad that government agencies are working together not only in promoting their respective mandates but also in supporting the aims and objectives of the other.
