UPV celebrates Arts Month 2012

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Jan 24 (PIA) -- In line with the nationwide celebration of February as Arts Month 2012, the University of Philippines Visayas Tacloban College through its Division of Humanities will be holding a one-day forum on February 3, 2012, entitled “Kinaadman para han aton Kalibutan ha Kabubuwason” (Knowledge for Our World Tomorrow) which will cover Philippine Culture, Education and Media Directions for the Millennium.

To make the discussion during the forum multi-faceted and interdisciplinary, invited guests will discuss topics on Eastern Visayan culture and the vision of the region moving towards the future.

Among the resource speakers during the forum include Felipe M. de Leon,Jr., chair of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, who will discuss Philippine Culture, Education and Media in the Global Arena.

Atty. Alberto Muyot, Undersecretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs, of the Department of Education (DepEd), and Commissioner for National Commission for Culture and the Arts will cover topics on Culture and Arts Programs and Policies of the DepEd; while Elmar Ingles, the director of the Philippine Cultural Education Program and former commissioner for Cultural Dissemination, National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Lastly, Values in Music Education will be covered by Prof. Alegria Ferrer, the artistic director of the College of Music of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

Meanwhile, it was learned that among the objectives of the activity is to direct the educators and media practitioners in the region towards appropriate approaches in the teaching, learning and dissemination of positive Philippine cultural values, traditions, and art; and to strengthen the sense of Filipino and Eastern Visayas cultural identity in the context of cross-cultural linkages of the digital age.

Likewise, it aims to help develop critical appreciation of media representations of Philippine culture, to strengthen the network of cultural workers, educators and media practitioners for the advancement of local, regional and Filipino national culture, and lastly to enhance the knowledge of educators and media practitioners about the role of culture in national development in a globalized world.
