Southern Leyte solon initiates formation of a cooperative for farmersMAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Jan 24 (PIA) -- The lone district lawmaker of this province has set into motion the creation of a credit cooperative that would lend capital to qualified farmers, a move that was expected to boost agricultural production.
“I announce the formation of a Pinoy First Credit Cooperative for our farmers,” Cong. Roger Mercado declared Thursday during the Agri-Tourism Coop Summit held at the DPWH Function Hall, this city.
Mercado said he wanted to see the province progress from a consumer to an exporter of agriculture products, and so he appealed for a strong cooperation from all concerned.
To realize the establishment of a credit facility for farmers, another series of meeting with the agriculture officers and those involved will be called, in order to have a technical working group (TWG) that would take charge of the details, Mercado said.
Department of Agriculture regional director Antonio Gerundio vowed to strengthen agriculture production in the province, establish technology and extension service, and assist in pooling resources especially from the national government.
The DA regional chief also pledged to eventually put up the provincial agricultural extension council. (PIA 8-Southern Leyte)
