Marikina to host national games for differently abled persons in February

MARIKINA CITY, Jan. 25 (PIA) -- The city government of Marikina will be hosting this year’s Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled (PhilSPADA) National Games on February 3 to 6, 2012 at the Marikina Sports Park.

Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman said the hosting of the game is to show the city’s support to athletes with disabilities.

“We are giving them the opportunity to show their skills as well as to prove that they can also excel in their chosen sports,” De Guzman said during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum in Manila.

The local chief executive also invited the public to watch the games to show support to the athletes at the same time, encourage families with disabled children to let them compete in sports.

According to PhilSPADA, the differently abled athletes will be competing in different kinds of target, water and ball sports like wheelchair basketball, volleyball, and many more.

Meanwhile, PhilSPADA President Michael Barredo said the tournament aims to give differently abled persons a chance to compete in tournaments like professional athletes.

The Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled- National Paralympic Committee of the Philippines (PhilSPADA-NPC) is a national sports association for people with disabilities tasked to spearhead all activities related to sports and physical fitness of Filipino persons with disability.

The said tournament is organized by the PhilSPADA-NPC in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee. (Marikina-PIO/RJB/JEG-PIA-NCR)
