Three third year high school students emerge as most ASEAN savvy in 5th ASEAN Quiz National Competitionby Alfred Kristoffer A. Guiang
QUEZON CITY, January 26 (PIA) -- Three third year high school students from Region I, XII, and VIII emerged as winners in the 5th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Quiz National Competition held January 25 in Quezon City.
Franchesca Anne Inacay of St. Albert the Great School in Dagupan City and Region I representative took the highest spot in the said competition, which was composed of four rounds (Visual Matching Type, True or False, Multiple Choice, and Fill-in-the Blanks).
The competition tested the participants’ knowledge and understanding of ASEAN, including member nations’ history, culture, politics, economy, and current events.
Region XII’s representative Kristiyanne Paul de Pedro of Koronadal National Comprehensive High School was second placer, while Region VIII’s Maria Angela Krizelle Rubin of San Joaquin National High School in Calbayog took the third spot.
The three winners will represent the country in the 5th ASEAN Quiz Regional Competition to be held in Cambodia in August 2012.
The three ASEAN junior “masters” will receive cash prizes of Php20,000, Php15,000, and Php10,000 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively. All three will also receive a Medal of Recognition and a four-year scholarship from the Systems Technology Institute (STI).
The 5th ASEAN Quiz National Competition was participated in by third year students from the 15 regions of the country and was spearheaded by People’s Television Network (PTV), the activity’s implementing agency, together with partner agencies such as the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Education, Presidential Communications Operation Office, Philippine Information Agency, and Philippine Broadcasting Service.
The ASEAN was founded on August 8, 1967. The ASEAN is currently composed of ten member states namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. (RJB/AKG-PIA-NCR)
