NYC to conduct youth fest for Sendong victims

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- The National Youth Commission (NYC) will conduct a festival to instill hope to the youth who were displaced by Tropical Storm Sendong.

The fest, dubbed as “Kabatan-onan Paglaum Festival,” will be held tomorrow, January 27, at Liceo de Cagayan University, here, and on January 28 at Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City.

NYC Undersecretary Leon Flores III said the fest aims to inspire the youth and encourage them to embrace hope as they rebuild their lives after the devastating storm.

He said psycho-social interventions and activities like peer counseling, photography class, acting/theatre workshop, and health information sessions will be provided to the displaced youth during the two-day festival.

The peer counseling, he further said, will help in the processing of their experiences, sentiments and concerns while the acting/theatre workshop will allow them to get in touch with their emotions, helps release tension, and facilitates the sharing of their respective stories.

On the other hand, Flores said the photography class will give the displaced youth tips on positive photography citing the need to replace the images of grief-stricken father, countless dead bodies, miles and miles of timber and floods, and other negative images into images of rebuilding, reconstruction and going back to normalcy.

Meanwhile, the health info sessions will help the youth gain knowledge and awareness on how they should act while in a humanitarian setting. A ‘teen kit’ will also be provided to them courtesy of the United Nations Population Fund.

They are exposed to or vulnerable to abuses and sexual harassment while they are in this setting thus the health info sessions will brief them of their rights so they can prevent cases of abuse, sexual harassment and the likes, he said.

The festival is a joint undertaking of the NYC, Pilipinas Natin and EDSA People Power Commission. (PIA-10)
