School buildings to be built in the “Bayanihan” villageby Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob
ILIGAN CITY, Lanao del Norte, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- President Benigno S. Aquino III said that aside from houses, school buildings will also be put up at the “Bayanihan” Village of Sta. Elena, to cater to the educational needs of the children affected by tropical storm Sendong.
The President made the announcement when he visited the city to participate in the celebration of the “Day of Volunteerism” last Jan. 25.
As one of the volunteers, the President took part in mixing cement and painting one of the first 300 Gawad Kalinga (GK) houses to be constructed in the area.
The activity was aimed to fasttrack the construction of the GK houses to be put up in the 15.9 –hectare property donated by the National Steel Corp., as permanent relocation site of the Sendong flashflood victims.
Located some four km. from the city proper, the site sits on a hilly background with no rivers and tributaries nearby to worry the residents.
Meanwhile, reports gathered by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC), region 10, reveal that 14 public school buildings in Iligan City were damaged by tropical storm Sendong.
Total estimated damage amounted to P220.33 million in these particular public schools:
Totally washed out: Bayug Elementary School, P10.20 million; and Mandulog Elementary School, P5.76 million.
Severely damaged: Iligan City East High School (ICEHS), Hinaplanon Annex, P1.392 million; ICEHS, Santiago Annex, P1.866 million; and Bagong Silang Elementary School, P1.374 million.
Cabili Village Elementary School, P3.01 million; Tu National High School, Digkilaan Annex, P695,000; Iligan City East Central School, P2.96 million; and Northeast IIB Central School, P1.13 million.
Severely flooded: Iligan City National High School (ICNHS), Tambacan Annex, P1.003 million; Villaverde Elementary School, P54,000; Benito S. Ong Memorial Elementary School, P326,000; Kapisahan Elementary School, P394,300; and Pugaan Elementary School, P120,000. (PIA-10)
