NegOcc. to buy rice from Panayby Lorenzo O. Lambatin Jr.
NEGROS OCC., January 26 (PIA6)—The National Food Authority here will aggressively procure rice from local sources specifically, from the island of Panay to fill up its deficit for this year.
NFA Provincial Manager Marianito Bejemino told PIA that the agency has projected that 400,000 bags of rice will be bought from the neighboring island.
He said the Department of Agriculture has announced a lower rice importation in 2012 and only about 100,000 bags of rice is expected to be delivered to Negros Occ. coming from outside the country.
Last year, the province procured 143,975 bags of Vietnam rice, which was lower than the target of 200,000.
Meanwhile, the province has sufficient rice stocks that will last for 85 days with 1.9 million bags in inventory.
“We assure Negrenses that we have a comfortable volume of rice for the first semester,” he said.
This year the NFA will be working for food security along with other lead government agencies. (JCM/LOL/PIA6)
