AFP sends new batch of contingent to Liberia

QUEZON CITY, Jan. 27 (PIA) -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Thursday, January 26 sent its 16th contingent to Liberia replacing last year’s batch that is set to return to the country on Saturday, January 28, 2012.

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Lt. Gen. Jessie D. Dellosa expressed his appreciation to the contingent who will be away from their homeland and their families in order to fulfill their duty of maintaining peace in a foreign land.

“I hope that they will accomplish this noble mission of safeguarding another country’s democratic institutions with the same dedication they have in safeguarding ours,” said Dellosa.

The AFP chief also expressed confidence that the new batch of contingent will perform their best just like the previous contingents.

The send-off ceremony of the 16th Philippine Contingent to Liberia (PCL) was led by First Air Division Commander Major General Ricardo Banayat in behalf of Air Force Commanding General MGen Lauro Catalino Dela Cruz held at the Philippine Air Force Hangar in Clark Air Base, Pampanga.

According to the AFP, the PCL is part of the AFP’s commitment to the UN’s global peace and development efforts.

Likewise, it is in accordance with the United Nations Resolution 1509 drafted in September 2003 that establishes the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) which is tasked to assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country following a ceasefire that ended the Second Liberian Civil War.

Colonel Armin Alejaga will lead this year’s contingent together with seven officers, one medical staff, and 107 enlisted personnel who have all undergone the UN Core Pre-deployment Training.

Meanwhile, the send-off program also featured the closing ceremony of the pre-deployment training that was facilitated by the Peacekeeping Operations School under the AFP Peacekeeping Operations Center headed by Colonel Abraham Claro C. Casis. (AFP/RJB/JEG-PIA-NCR)
