by Maritess B. Beñas

LA PAZ, Abra, Jan. 27 (PIA) -- There was really “more fun in La Paz” during its town fiesta celebration dubbed as “Lames Festival” with an influx of tourists who watched and participated the invitational motocross and various activities from January 21 – 25, 2012.

Mayor Joseph Sto. Niño B. Bernos brought in the “who’s who” in the world of motocross in the country like national riders Kenneth San Andres, Jovie Saulog, Winsor Pamorca, Macmac Desbaru and Jerick Mitra to the delight of the Abrenios who flocked to the municipality to enjoy the merriment.

Most of the dirt-riders came from Tuguegarao, Palawan, Dumaguete City, Tarlac, Baguio City, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte and a few qualifiers from Abra.

The festivities were not simply for entertainment for the people of La Paz, but also chance for them to show their talents and skills in arts and dances as they competed in the various performances like street dancing, modern dance and ballroom dance dubbed as “kendeng-kendeng” participated by the 13 barangays in the municipality.

The main event on January 24, the “Kung Hei Fat Choi“ day was opened by a Eucharistic Celebration with Bishop Leopoldo C. Jaucian, as the main celebrant together with some other invited priests to celebrate the feast Mary of the Queen of Peace as the patron saint of La Paz.

The Bishop emphasized in his homily the importance of thanksgiving, strengthening of the catholic faith, and renewal of commitment. The celebration culminated with the Search for “Becky ng La Paz”, a beauty pageant for gays.

'Lames’, Ilokano term for fish, was adopted for the fiesta celebration as the town is strategically situated within the grand valleys along the winding Abra River, and fishing is one of the sources of livelihood of its people.(MTBB/PIA-Abra)
