Sports news: DBL holds basketball play-off in Dagupan

By April Montes

DAGUPAN CITY, Jan. 27 (PIA) -- The 17th season of the cityís Developmental Basketball League (DBL) held its championship play-off last January 22 at the city Astrodome.

The Divine Word Academy of Dagupan (DWAD) faced St. Albert the Great School (SAGS) during the seasonís fina

DWAD won the championship three years ago and for two consecutive years landed second next to St. Johnís Cathedral School (SJCS). On the other hand, SAGS is deemed as the seasonís dark horse as it is the first time that the school made it to the semi-finals.

DWAD retained the championship trophy beating SAGS, 83-75.. Education Program Supervisor Edilberto Abalos said, DWAD prepared better than SAGS but SAGS canít be underestimated because itís the first time that they entered the finals. It is the team that spectators should look forward to in the next season.

The players that will compose the mythical team representing Dagupan City division in the upcoming Ilocos Region Athletic Association (IRAA) were chosen from the participating schools.

Awarded as the Best Coach was Rev. Fr. Edsel R. Demillo, SVD; Most Valuable Player Jed Biascan; and Most Improved Player, Kenneth Meneses; all coming from the winning team.

The contest that kicked-off last September 2011 was participated in by both public and private schools. The game develops physical fitness and strengthens camaraderie and friendship among players, schools, and officials, said Abalos.

The Department of Education (DepEd) recognizes the need to provide pupils and students with learning opportunities that is not solely focusing in academics. Thus, it is important that youths are exposed to various programs and activities like sports where they can channel their interests and potentials to help them become holistically capable individuals.
