PIA Press Release Tuesday, January 31, 2012 Various activities to mark World Wetlands Day in IloiloILOILO CITY, Jan. 31 (PIA) -- Various activities have been lined up by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources 6 through its Protected Areas and Wildlife Coastal Zones Management Services to mark the celebration of World Wetlands Day in Iloilo on February 2.DENR 6 reported that an educational tour will be conducted at Banate Bay which is situated within the municipalities of Barotac Nuevo, Anilao, Banate and Barotac Viejo, Iloilo. The educational tour will include waterbird watching and identification, commune with nature, and mangrove and associate species identification. There will be also a focus group discussion on biodiversity conservation to identified community centers. “Wetland Tourism: A Great Experience” is the theme of this year’s celebration which focuses on tourism as one of the many services that wetlands deliver. DENR 6 Regional Executive Director Julian Amador in the press report said that “it is another opportunity for the people to work with the environment. Wetland tourism provides a venue for the community protecting the ecosystem, and in return, these activities could provide them sustainable living." On the other hand, the campaign on wetland tourism, according to Environment Secretary Ramon Paje is also a venue to look at the value of wetlands from the perspective of tourists and local communities in consonance with the program of President Benigno Aquino in preserving the environment.
