090819-R10-AMNESTY

Gun Amnesty: The Philippine National Police Regional Office (PRO)-10, through Executive Order 817, signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last July 7, implements general firearms amnesty from October 1 to 31 to enable those with expired licenses or unregistered firearms to legalize their ownership. Deadline of submission for renewal of license of firearms starts on August 1, 2009 to September 20, 2009. EO 817 aimed at significantly reducing the number of loose firearms nationwide which reportedly account for 97 percent of crime incidents involving guns. PNP statistics place the number of loose firearms nationwide at 1,110,277, including 559,326 with expired licenses. Further, 42,231 of the loose firearms are in Northern Mindanao. The amnesty would also lessen the chance of loose firearms being used in the 2010 elections. (L-R) PSSupt. Edward S. Abejuela, Chief, Regional Personnel / Human Resource Development Division (RPHRDD) PSSupt. Gerardo Rosales, Chief, Regional Planning Division (ROPD), PSSupt. Leonardo S. Esclamado, Deputy Regional Director for Operations (DRDO), PSupt. Jomaira B. Estrada, Chief, Regional Public Information Office (RPIO), PCInsp. Sandy Vales, Chief, (FES), and Michael Angelo Bustamante, President, PNP Press Corps. (Rodolfo D. Mendoza / PIA-10)
