 Onions are one of Siquijor's most successful vegetable crops today. Different varieties are produced organically in barangay Cantabon, Siquijor, Siquijor. The provincial government is stepping up its efforts to raise the capability of its agriculture sector like onion production, for instance, to meet the province's food security needs, and at the same time strengthen its resolve to gainfully participate in both national and international trade while ensuring the sustainability of its agricultural processes and the resource base. Nutrition and diet experts say onions are low in calories yet add abundant flavor to a wide variety of foods. With only 45 calories per serving, onions are fat and cholesterol free, very low in sodium, high in vitamin C, and a good source of fiber and other key nutrients. (photo by Reynan Ansing/DA) |
