Enhanced pre-school program launched in Bicol
by EE Jerusalem
LEGAZPI CITY (August 17) -— The provinces of Albay, Camarines Norte, and Masbate were chosen as pilot areas under the Enhanced Pre-School Education Program.
The Enhanced Pre-School Development Program is a collaborative effort of the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Health (DOH) and the concerned local government units.
DSWD Bicol regional director Eliseo Copian said that since the children of poorest households are priority of the Early Childhood Care and Development Program, the DSWD will target poorest children to avail of the program.
The Enhanced Pre-School Development Program aims to ensure that all poor and disadvantaged pre-school children have access to organized childhood care and development. It will also help in reducing undernourishment and short-term hunger among the underweight pre-schoolers through the feeding program component of the project.
The program is in line with the announcement of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that instead of requiring a fifth year in high school, the government will incorporate pre-school in the educational ladder to encourage support to the early childhood development program of the Department of Education.
In line with its implementation the DepEd is taking the lead in the conduct of training of Day-Care workers and pre-school teachers along the pre-school standard curriculum and the utilization of pre-school materials and handbooks.
The pilot communities under this program are: Placer, Basud and Uson for Masbate province; Mercedes, Capalonga and Basud in Camarines Norte; and the towns of Jovellar, Pio Duran and Malinao in the province of Albay. (DSWD) [top]
