PIA Press Release

Commentary: Moving as one

Baguio City (5 December) -- Team Philippines clinched its first ever overall championship of the Southeast Asian Games.

The sportsmanship shown by all the competitors mark the collective excellence of ASEAN as a solid region sharing a proud heritage.

The Filipino athletes did the nation proud. They have responded heroically with sheer determination, courage and strength by showing and putting up their best. Indeed, we have rediscovered the best in the Filipino and enhanced the Filipino spirit in achieving the best, setting aside differences and showing the world that we can move as one and go for the gold with incomparable unity and teamwork.

The over all championship of RP in the SEAG can also be attributed to the collective efforts, close partnership and cooperation among national sports associations, the private sector, the local government officials of the different venues of the games, the volunteers, and the enthusiasm of the people.

The Philippines is looking out for number one not only in sports, but in economic strength and political stability-- enduring sacrifices and tough decisions together. Like our athletes, the people can be rallied to bite the bullet and keep the now or never attitude for economic and political triumph.

It comes as no surprise that the economy continues to grow despite the political turmoil. The resiliency of the Filipino has been tried and tested for the past years. This can also be seen as a sign that the people have accepted the legitimacy, strength and continuity of the Arroyo administration.

Team Philippines is moving forward not only in sports, but in the economy and in political reform. The road is clear for the Philippines to be a first world country in twenty years. No dreams are too distant to achieve if we prepare well, work hard and close ranks. (PIA) [top]
