PIA Press Release

Army 3ID maintains support for PGMA leadership

Iloilo City (15 December) -- The Third Infantry Division of the Philippine Army (3ID, PA) expressed their support to the leadership of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to assure the public that the rumored coup plot is just an effort by some sectors to destabilize the government.

This was declared by Maj. Lyndon Sollesta, PA 3ID spokesman during a PIA interview, who also said that in their recent command conference, they were reminded "to just follow their mission, focus on their objective, adhere to the constitution and generally support the leadership of our Commnader-in-Chief, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo".

"We assured the public that the 3ID is intact, and the reported coup plot is a mere rumor pass around by disgruntled, retired or even active military officials", said Maj. Sollesta during the PIA interview, and added that "in our area which covers Panay, Negros, Cebu and Bohol, all officers here remain loyal and there's no such thing as troop movements in the area".

Maj. Sollesta said that to maintain the peace and order situation during the Christmas season in the area, the 3ID has deployed forces "because we received reports that the December 26 anniversary of the CPP might be marked with violent or aggressive actions, so we beefed up our intelligence operations and counter-intelligence to make our holiday season orderly and peaceful".(T.Villavert/PIA)

The 3ID spokesman also said that the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police in the area are working hand in hand to ensure public safety during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye in one of his statements regarding coup rumors said "let us write finis to these distractions. The country is gearing for an economic revolution, not a political revolution. It is time to shake off the hangover of political turmoil and move forward". (PIA) [top]
