CHED 8 offers scholarships for indigent students

Tacloban City (December 19) –- In line with the national government’s program Education for All, Director Maria Rita Ortiz of the Commission on Higher Education Region 8 announces the schedule for the 2006 CHED National Scholarship Qualifying Examination for all entering college freshmen applicants.

The goal of the CHED is to broaden the access of deserving and qualified Filipinos to higher education opportunities in accordance with the Constitutional mandate that the State shall establish and maintain a system of scholarship, grant, student loan programs, subsidiaries and other incentives which shall be available to deserving students in both public and private students, especially to the underprivileged.

The National Scholarship Qualifying Examinations according to Director Ortiz, shall serve as a safety net to ensure quality and shall provide an objective tool in identifying the target beneficiaries/grantees under the various Student Financial Assistance Programs.

Director Ortiz said that the applicants must meet the required qualifications such as that the applicant must be a Filipino citizen. He or she must be a highschool graduate or a candidate for graduation from high school. She or he must have a general average of 85 % if applying for Scholarship or 80 % if applying for grants. The income of the parents should not exceed one hundred fifty thousand pesos per annum and that the applicant must be in good physical condition and of good moral character. Lastly, the applicant must not be more than thirty years of age at the time of application.

For those who are interested to take the qualifying examinations, Director Ortiz said, they may secure Application Form at the CHED Regional Office No. VIII at Real St., Corner Calanipawan Road, Sagkahan, Tacloban City and submit the Application Form together with the other required documents to CHED Regional Office VIII.

Director Ortiz said that the applicants or those who are interested to apply must take note of the important dates like the deadline for submission of application forms and the schedule of Examinations.

She said that the deadline for submission of application Forms is January 15, 2006 while the schedule of examinations is February 26, 2006 at the Asian Development Foundation College at P. Burgos St., Tacloban City. (PIA 8) [top]
