Davao City (23 December) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the Department of Health to mainstream the natural family planning and restructure its advocacy and service delivery to the people.
Under Administrative Order 132-04, the President has created the DOH Natural Family Planning program including the implementation and its program management.
The Natural Family Planning Strategic Plan for 2002-2006 has the overall goal of reducing risks among women and children due to short birth intervals and frequent pregnancies and child births.
The natural planning method advocacy is being undertaken by DOH in collaboration with the Philippine Information Agency and the Bureau of Broadcast Radyo ng Bayan with a regular radio program aired over DXRP every Monday from 11:00am to 12:00noon.
DOH OIC-regional director Dr. Salvador Estrera said with better-spaced children and better-planned family size, parenting will be more effective leading to a more productive and caring family life.
The objective of DOH-NFP plan is the raise fertility awareness to at least 75% of young men and women. The plan also aims to train and retrain at least 75% of frontline health providers to modern Natural Family Planning methods and raise the NFP current use rate to 20% among reproductive age couples.
In mainstreaming the NFP, DOH will undertake wider information campaign about fertility awareness issues to the mass base, especially the young adults and young couples of reproductive ages. (PIA) [top]
