Region 8 mentors train on strategies for teaching physics

Tacloban City (June 7) -- In order to equip the secondary Physics teachers in the secondary level, with the skills and knowledge necessary in teaching science concepts, the Department of Education Regional Office 8 hosted the Training Workshop on Interactive Strategies for Physics Teachers at the Leyte Park Hotel, Tacloban City recently.

Atty. Alberto Escobarte, DepEd RO 8 Assistant Regional Director said that the training would benefit the Physics teachers particularly in improving the quality of Physics classroom instruction and eventually uplift the quality of education which is one of the priority goals of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's administration.

This, he said is a good way of solving the perennial problem on the quality of education in the country which the President believes will be solved if only all the stakeholders will cooperate and help one another for the sake of the Filipino youth.

The Training is a joint project of the Department of Education and the National Education Academy of the Philippines (NEAP) in partnership with the Jesus V. del Rosario (JVR) Foundation and the Don Bosco Science and Technology Center.

DepEd 8 Mrs. Rhodora Sizon, the Regional Science Supervisor, said that a total of 102 participants, 52 from Region 8 and 50 from Region 7, attended the one-week training. The participants were major and non-major Physics teachers recommended by their respective divisions and Regional Supervisors.

The training provided the participants with manipulative skills in the local design, production and use of simple Physics apparatuses for a more effective teaching in the secondary level.

The emphasis was on how to blend science and technology and use this for livelihood activities of the students while they are still in school and later on, when they are already out of school.

The training staff was headed by Mr. Narciso Mefragata, retired technical head of the Don Bosco Science and Technology Center while the co trainors were John Mefragata, instructor of the Concordia College, Elmer Meneses, Physics teacher of Sta Maria National HighSchool in Pampanga and Mr. Virgil Samonte, Physics teacher of the Don Eulogio DeGuzman Municipal High School in La Union.

They are joined by Mr. Albert Datu, Pysics teacher of Justino Sevilla High School in Pampanga and Mr. Denniss Fantillanan, production Supervisor of the Mefragata Enterprises.

Also included as trainors were Mr. Edwin Gonda , executive director of the JVR Foundation, Inc and the staff Gina O. Bulanhagui and Clara Mabalat. (PIA 8) [top]
