Commentary: On the environment re M/T Solar Oil Spill
by Bapa Bedu
Koronadal, South Cotabato (20 September) -- Please note that the M/T Solar Oil spill is the same as the Guimaras Oil Spill.
The environment must be given more breathing space as we continue without letup the cleaning of the oil-stricken areas and pursue justice for the victims. Tough rehabilitation and preservation measures must be done to redeem the lost glory of the areas affected by the oil spill.
The President has accepted the recommendation of the Coral Cay Conservation group to temporarily curtail the fishing on the affected areas and she has ordered the DENR, the Philippine Coast Guard and other concerned agencies to draw up the boundaries and set up a no-fish zone in the affected areas as well as to determine its timeline.
The President has also instructed the DENR to link up with international environmental groups to come up with a comprehensive and wide-ranging rehabilitation plan for the damaged marine life.
Concerned agencies have also been instructed to conduct consultations with the people, and come up with a concrete livelihood assistance plan for those who would be affected by the temporary fishing ban.
We hope that no other oil spills would happen in the future (ajph/PIA 12) [top]
