Gov't promotes use of alternative fuels

By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (4 April) -- The government has been promoting the use of alternative fuels in view of the continued rise in the price of imported oil.

The mounting prices of imported oil of which the Philippines is almost 100 percent dependent prompted the government to prepare measures that will help the country move away from utilizing imported oil towards greater use of indigenous energy resources.

With the increasing cost of energy, Philippine National Oil Company-Alternative Fuels Corporation (PNOC-AFC) president Peter Abaya said various countries are now exploring alternative sources.

"There is a need for research and development to support the needs of emerging renewable alternative fuel industry in the Philippines", Abaya said.

Following the need for further research, the PNOC-AFC and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) have entered into a partnership for the development of alternative fuels.

The DOST which is in the forefront of research and development in renewable energy have agreed to focus their cooperation in collaborative activities on bio-fuels, technical assistance and capacity building.

The Biofuels Act, signed into law in January 2007, mandated the DOST to identify and develop viable feedstock for the production of biofuels and implement a research and development program supporting a sustainable improvement in biofuel production and utilization technology. (PIA XI) [top]
