Four Iloilo DAR scholars graduate cum laude

Iloilo City (4 April) -- Four of the fifty scholars in the province of Iloilo under the President Diosdado Macapagal Agrarian Scholarship Program (PDMASP) graduated cum laude this year.

The PDMASP was implemented by the Department of Agrarian Reform in 2003. This is an innovative scholarship program that provides assistance to qualified and deserving children or descendants of Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) nationwide.

Under the program qualified beneficiaries are given opportunity to enroll in degree courses in agriculture and other related courses from state colleges and universities in the country. The DAR is spending for the tuition fees, books and monthly stipend of the scholars.

DAR - Iloilo Information Officer Yvonne Senobin said a total of 113 scholars have been enrolled under the program since its implementation where the remaining 63 scholars will graduate in the succeeding years.

Senobin identified the four scholars who graduated cum laude as follows: Milona Amor C. Capanang, Irene V. Legaspi, Darwin S. Viadumang and Christine Carl Arre.

Capanang and Legaspi completed their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Agriculture degrees at West Visayas College of Science and Technology, Leon campus and West Visayas State University, Calinog campus respectively. On the other hand, Viadumang and Arre finished their B.S. in Secondary Education at Iloilo State College of Fisheries, Barotac Nuevo campus and Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College, Concepcion campus.

Senobin said through the program, the DAR does not only aspire to convey the importance of education in the consciousness of the farmers but also intends to provide them the necessary resources to pursue higher learning.

"The department believes that this will lead farmers to eventually assume greater task of the nation-building to effusively participate in the country's economic activities", said Senobin. (PIA) [top]
