Adventure racing, mix martial arts dominate latest Scoop forum

by Romy Sabaldan

Davao City (4 April) -- ADVENTURE racing is slowly gaining adherents in Davao City and the neighboring new island city of IGACOS of Davao Province.

In fact, the multi event adventure sports is expected to make more lively the holding of the colorful Caracoles Festival of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), a component city composed of two islands just five minutes drive by motorized banca from its nearest neighbor Davao City.

Portia Abanilla, spokesperson of the organizer Events Plus, announced the coming event during the Tuesday forum of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (Scoop-Davao) held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, this city.

The two-day Caracoles Festival which is slated on April 28-29, 2007 is the island's own version of a cultural festival similar to that of the now internationally-known Kadayawan Festival of Davao City. One difference though is that the Caracoles is also a festivity of thanksgiving for the abundant marine resources of the Davao Gulf while that of the Kadayawan is a thanksgiving for its bumper harvests of fruits. Davao City is famous for its sweet pomelos, vitamin-rich Durian and a number of other exotic fruits found only in the rich fertile lands of the city.

Abanilla said that the Department of Tourism, DOT-supported adventure race is expected to gather around 250 participants, mostly tri-athletes considering that the three main events are running, biking and swimming.

In the meantime, fresh from a successful staging of the first ever "Enkwentro" Cenojas Mix Martial Arts Championship, organizer Mars Cenojas has thanked all the supporters of the event including the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) represented by this writer and Jimmy Javier, vice-president of Scoop-Davao for the media support.

Cenojas, a 6th Dan Blackbelt, said the mix martial arts championship has put to the test the limits of human endurance and capacity to absorb judo wrestling, karate strikes, boxing and grappling. This kind of game is being won by taking down the opponent to the mat similar to that of the wushu sparring or just plain knocking out of the opponent as in boxing.

The event held last Sunday at the RMC Gym and attended by a jampacked crowd of ringside viewers produced three new mix martial arts champions in, the small but terrible Philip Parcon of the BeeFit Bad Boys in the bantamweight division, Jilmar "The Stonecold" Tangayan of the Cenojas Mix Martial Arts (formerly Davao Karate Club) in the lightweight division and Mark OG David Billena of the BeeFit Bad Boys in the middleweight division. The main event which is the SuperFight between judo expert Thirdy Escovilla of I.Flex Fitness and Karatedo blackbelt Angelito "The Saint" Manguray of the BeeFit Bad Boys ended in a draw.
