Commentary: The people themselves will guard the ballot, fight fraud

Tacloban City (April 4) -- Despite the tainting, doubting and taunting of some political candidates, the May 14 elections will be a clean and peaceful one.

The Filipino people themselves will guard the ballot and fight fraud to protect their votes, and they can be assured of the support of non-partisan law enforcement agencies.

The educated electorate will no longer allow the gun, goons and gold to rule any election at whatever level, to rule the forthcoming elections. They already know the consequences of having voted for candidates because of money and so in this May elections, they will vote for the candidates whose dedication to public service have been tested and tried.

Several candidates’ constant claim that there will be an electoral fraud in the forthcoming May 14 elections makes people have several lines of thinking.

First of all, if these candidates believe that there will never be a clean and honest elections, then why did they continued to submit themselves for elections. They could have just boycotted it.

Or are some candidates who honestly believe that they will lose, are already conditioning the minds of the people that they will lose because of cheating. What about if they win? Will this mean that they cheated?

It is hope that all the candidates will stand beside the people in calling for a high level campaign based on the issues of economic security and political stability, not a low level debate on cheating, machinations or personal attacks.

It is the expectation of the people, that the candidates came to the contest armed with a superior platform, reaching out for unity among the people and with the prime focus to serve, not their personal interests and grandeur, but the people.

The candidates are therefore, urged to lift up the level of campaign and make the lifting up of the lives of the people, their true and genuine concern. (PIA 8) [top]
