Leyte commemorates ‘Araw ng Kagitingan’, Veterans Week

Tacloban City (10 April) -- The Province of Leyte through Governor Jericho "Icot" L. Petilla, led in the commemoration of the Philippine Veterans Week and the 65th Anniversary of "Araw ng Kagitingan" on April 9 to promote, preserve, and memorialize the principles, ideals and deeds of our war veterans as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country especially among the youths of the land as what Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo put emphasis in her Memorandum Order No. 241.
A wreath laying ceremony took place at the Monument of the Unknown Soldiers in Palo, Leyte as a way of paying tribute to the war veterans as well as the heroism of those who fought and sacrificed their lives in bringing back the freedom of our beloved country.
The Department of National Defense and the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, have been working very hard to ensure that this significant event wherein our heroes made sacrifices should at all times be remembered and honored.
The Veterans Federation of the Philippines headed by its Commander, Apolinario M. Canillas, received a plaque of recognition from Governor Petilla for its continuous efforts in inculcating into the hearts of the young citizens the value of patriotism and the noble virtue of being ready to give up oneself for the sake of our beloved country.
Governor Petilla also received a plaque of appreciation for his unprecedented services and unselfish dedication in enhancing patriotism and love of country as exemplified by his continuous and undaunted efforts for the welfare of veterans.
This year’s solemn commemoration of these events was made possible by the collective efforts of the inter-agency task force and all those who participated in the success of these historical events. (PIA-8) [top]
