Western Visayas bares nominees for Gawad Saka 2007
Iloilo City (10 April) -- Seven outstanding farmers and farmersí organizations from Western Visayas will vie for the Gawad Saka 2007 National Awards. The Department of Agriculture said the nominees were selected through comprehensive record-book evaluation and field validation by the regional selection committees.
Five of the seven regional nominees for the individual category were from negros Occidental, namely,. Noel Horacio C. Abelardo of Bago City, outstanding small animal raiser category; Trinidad Espinido of Talisay City, outstanding large animal raiser category; Vilmo Limuaco, Bacolod City, outstanding agricultural scientist category; Ronald James C. Aluyen of Sipalay, outstanding young farmer category; and Felicisimo N. Pajanconi of Hinigaran, sugarcane farming category.
The two farmersí organizations are the Pagaypay 4-H club of Passi City, in Iloilo and Lambuyao Rural Improvement Club (RIC) of Oton, which will compete for the national outstanding young farmers organization and outstanding RIC respectively.
DA 6 OIC Director said the Gawad Saka is a collective program with the farmers and fisherfolks that supports the governmentís goal of attaining food security, mitigating hunger, generating jobs, r4ducing poverty in the rural areas and ensuring the base of the natural resources.
Nacionales said the annual search aims to recognize individuals and organizations with exemplary performance and accomplishments in the agriculture and fishery sectors.
The national winners in each category will be provided with incentive packages in order to enhance their technologies, improve production and income-generating activities and empower themselves to contribute to the welfare and socio-economic upliftment of their communities.
The awarding ceremony will be given during the Farmers and Fisherfolks month celebration this May 2007 at Malacanang palace with president Gloria Arroyo giving the award. (DA 6/PIA) [top]
