Bohol prepares for Earth Week celebration
Tagbilaran City (10 April) -- Enjoined by the Department Of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), different line government agencies and non-government organizations (NGO) in the province of Bohol, are now busy planning out activities to celebrate Earth Week, slated from April 18-22, 2007.
Led by the Bohol Environment Management Office (BEMO) and DENR-BOHOL, the group proposed on the following activities: Clean Air Day – this is also called “car-less day” or “walk-day”, wherein in an effort to clean our air, people are encouraged to walk and not use their cars and motor vehicles; Scubasurero – cleaning our seas from wastes that are destructive from our marine resources; information caravan; Kapihan sa PIA; and bike for a cause.
There will also exhibits from the different NGO’s concerned about the environment, a presentation on the assessment of the Bohol Environment Code, and the reading of a Pastoral Letter during the Sunday mass.
One of the highlights of the affair is the Candidates’ Forum, tentatively set on April 21 at the Island City Mall Activity Area. Gubernatorial, Mayoral and First District Congressional candidates will be invited to discuss and share their views and agenda on the different environmental issues and concerns affecting the province.
Candidate will also be asked to sign a commitment to include an environment agenda once elected to office. This activity will be handled by the Social Action Center, BEMO and other concerned agencies.
DENR, recently issued a memorandum to all directors to celebrate Earth Day with the theme “ Stewardship in Action”, anchoring on the areas of Green Governance – chaired by Government, Green Sacraments- by the Church, Green Economics - for Industry, and Green Choices – by NGO’s and Civil Society.
