Urban rivers cleanup marks World Water Day

LEGAZPI CITY (11 April) —- Major urban rivers in the Bicol region were cleaned up again under the continuing implementation of Clean Bicol Rivers Project spearheaded by the Environmental; Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-EMB).

Adoptors, cooperators and locales within the stretch of identified waterbodies joined hands in hauling debris, which forms part of the bayanihan style of campaign launched in September 2006.

EMB Bicol regional director Gilbert Gonzales lauded the support of local government units (LGUs), sangguniang barangays, national government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), business sector, religious groups and other civil society organizations that motivated the Bureau in intensifying the campaign for the rehabilitation of major urban rivers in Bicol.

Gonzales said the creation of River Management Councils (RMCs) for the urban rivers will compliment in the sustainable management and rehabilitation of identified urban rivers. “An interim council composed of representatives from the LGUs, academe, NGAs, NGOs, industries and other civil society groups would serve as an overseer of the rehabilitation project.”

Urban rivers like Sagumayon in Albay, Balos River in Camarines Norte, Daet River in Camarines Norte, Gogon in Catanduanes, Tugos in Masbate and Salog in Sorsogon were recipients to the rehab project initiated by the EMB.

Aside from the river clean-up, embankment tree planting, beautification and info dissemination campaign were conducted by members, adoptors and cooperators of the RMCs.

Gonzales said the EMB is optimistic that this community based environment campaign would continue to inspire and empower communities in the region to clean-up, fix and protect the local environment. (EMB/PIA) [top]
