NorMin has 2,463 candidates for May polls - Comelec

Cagayan de Oro City (11 April) -- A total of 2,463 individuals have filed their certificates of candidacies (COC) for the various elective posts in Northern Mindanao for the May 14, 2007 elections.

“With the recent approval of Cagayan de Oro City’s 2nd District, the region will now vie for the posts of Representatives in 12 Congressional Districts,” Atty. Dennis L. Ausan, Regional Director of the Commission on Elections, region 10, said.

Also included are the posts for Governors, Vice Governors and a set of Sangguniang Panlalawigan Kagawads (Provincial Board Members) for each of the region’s five (5) provinces, as well as, Mayors, Vice-Mayor plus a set of Sangguniang Bayan Kagawad’s (Municipal/City Board Members) for each of the region’s 85 municipalities and eight (8)cities.

Of the candidates, 45 are vying for the post of Congressmen, 13 for Provincial Governor, 12 for Vice Governor, 99 for PB members, 213 for Mayor, 214 for Vice Mayor and 1,867 for MB/CB members, Ausan said.

Meanwhile, he said he most number of candidates for Congressmen are in the following: Cagayan de Oro City, 1st District with seven (7) followed by CDO, 2nd District, Lanao del Norte, 1st District and Bukidnon, 2nd District with five (5) each and Misamis Oriental, 2nd District, four (4).

The 1st Districts of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte, 2nd Districts with three (3) each and Bukidnon, 3rd District as well as Mis. Occ. 2nd District, two (2) each.

For the position of Governor, the most candidates are in Lanao del Norte with four (4) followed by Mis. Or. with three (3) and Bukidnon, Camiguin and Mis. Occ., two (2) each.

“One (1) candidate is running unopposed for post of Vice-Governor in Mis. Occ. while Bukidnon has two (2) and Camiguin, Lanao del Norte and Mis. Or. has three (3) each, “ Ausan also said.

Again, the most candidates for the post of PB members are in Lanao del Norte with 57, followed by Mis. Or., 55, Bukidnon, 21, Mis. Occ. 19 and Camiguin 16.

Likewise, the most candidates for Mayor are also in Lanao del Norte with 57, followed by Mis. Or., 55, Bukidnon, 49, Mis. Occ., 37, Camiguin, 10 and CDO, five (5).

For the post of Vice-Mayor, the most candidates are in Lanao del Norte with 60, Mis. Or., 58, Bukidnon, 50, Mis. Occ., 33, Camiguin, 10 and CDO, three (3).

For the post of MB/CB members, the most candidates are in Mis. Or. with 499, followed by Lanao del Norte, 468, Bukidnon, 465, Mis. Occ., 284, Camiguin, 96 and CDO, 55.

As reported earlier, a total of 2,128,568 voters have been registered in Northern Mindanao for the May elections, this year, which is actually 82,011or 4% higher compared to 2,046,557 registered voters in the May, 2004 elections.

Data at the Comelec show the following number of registered voters: Mis. Or., 673,592, Bukidnon, 600,854, Lanao del Norte, 484,844, Mis. Occ., 315,149 and Camiguin, 54,129.

Ausan also said there is also a total of 11,908 clustered precincts in the 2,020 barangays of the region, the highest number of which is in Mis. Or. with 3,456, followed by Lanao del Norte with 3,185, Bukidnon with 2,907, Mis. Occ. with 2,057, and lowest in Camiguin with 303 clustered precincts.

Except for CDO, a highly urbanized city, whose voters will not be voting for the provincial officials of Mis. Or., all the component cities regionwide will be voting for officials in the provinces where they are located, Ausan added. (PIA 10) [top]
