Iligan bets ink pact for peaceful polls

Cagayan de Oro City (11 April) -- Local candidates of Iligan City gathered at the city’s public plaza last April 10 2007, to sign a Peace Covenant for the May 14 elections.

The signing was initiated by the Iligan City Police Office and done in coordination with the Jaycees Junior Chamber International Philippines (JCIP) Iligan, Inc. it was the highlight of the Jaycee Week celebration.

All local candidates for congressman (1st District), city mayor and city vice-mayor signed the agreement to have an honest, peaceful and credible elections.

They also pledged not to employ force, violence and intimidation in seeking the mandate of the voting public, and abide by the lawful guidelines and respect the sanctity of the ballots.

Present during the event were the candidates for Representative of the 1st Congressional District, namely Imelda Q. Dimaporo (LAKAS-CMD); Vicente F. Belmonte, Jr. (GO/UNO); Nikki Badelles (KAMPI); Uriel Borja (Independent) and Leo Zaragoza (LP).

The city’s mayoral bets also signed the peace contract, namely Lawrence Ll. Cruz (LDP); Franklin M. Quijano (LAKAS-CMD); and Alejo A. Yañez

Likewise, city vice-mayor hopefuls Henry C. Dy (UNO); Ruderic C. Marzo (KAMPI); Romeo C. Nabua (LAKAS-CMD) and Franco Badelles (LP) all signed up.

Bishop Elenito Galido of the Diocese of Iligan served as one of the witnesses of the event. Also present as witnesses were City Election Officer Atty. Annaliza Barredo, Imam’s League of Iligan President Monid Mangilala; Juanito Enriquez, Jr., President of the Civil Society Organization-Forum for Peace; and Rev. Letty Prades of the Living Word Ministry.

Meanwhile, S/Supt. Virgilio Ranes, Iligan City PNP Director and JCIP Iligan Inc. President Ramy Nasara said they were pleased over the result of the covenant signing and looked forward to a peaceful election period. (PIA-Iligan) [top]
