Gagayam Festival to replace Sabangan fiesta

by Juliet Saley

SABANGAN, Mt. Province (13 April) -- Members of the Sanggguniang Bayan of this town passed on March 15 a resolution establishing the eSabangan Gagayam Festival to be a yearly activity of the Municipality in place of its annual town fiesta.

The Gagayam Festival which was staged for the first time last month was conceptualized after series of workshops conducted last January to February of this year by the municipal government and participated in by representative from its 15 Barangays and other sectors based in the municipality.

Observers and participants during the festival said this activity should continue because this serves as a venue to rekindle among the young generation the rich cultural heritage of the municipality passed on to them by their forefathers.

It was noted that while the fiesta usually is an occasion for the youth and school children, the Gagayam Festival involves the active participation of the old folks side by side with the youth.

According to Theodore Velasco, Project Coordinator, the institutionalization of the Gagayam Festival as an annual cultural festival of the people of Sabangan is one way of promoting tourism and bringing income to the municipality which could help alleviate poverty and spur unity among the constituents.
