Dagupan’s Haven for Children marks 1st year
PANGASINAN (16 April) -- Some 20 children, abandoned by their parents sang paeans in praise of their worthy benefactors.
This was the touching scene during the first anniversary celebration of the Haven for Children located in Bonuan Binloc.
Now made as Regional Center for Children by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the center, more popularly known as “The Haven”, was built in memory of KC De Venecia, the late daughter of Speaker and Mrs. Jose de Venecia Jr., congressman of the fourth district of Pangasinan who died in a fire at the family residence some years ago.
During the celebration, Aileen Olegario, office-in-charge of the center, thanked Speaker de Venecia who provided funds for the construction of the building facility of the center.
The Haven for Children is a pet project of De Venecia’s wife Gina, chairperson of the Congressional Spouses Foundation, Inc. (CSFI).
CSFI turned it over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development soon after its construction.
The center is adjacent to the Haven for Women earlier put up by CSFI, also with the help of Speaker de Venecia, which is now the home of formerly battered and abused women.
Mrs. Kimi Cojuangco, wife of Rep. Mark Cojuangco of the fifth district of Pangasinan, represented Mrs. De Venecia as guest of honor and speaker during a program marking the celebration.
The Haven for Children can accommodate up to 40 children at one time. There, they are given temporary home, food, love and care like what normal parents would to their children.
The center is part of the national network of the Haven for Children being managed by the DSWD in various parts of the country. (PIA-Pangasinan) [top]
