Laguna pushes bird flue-free measures
Sta. Cruz, Laguna (19 April) -- The Provincial Government of Laguna in coordination with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian headed by Dr. Mary Grace M. Bustamante, OIC - OPV, spearheaded the conduct of Avian Influenza Preparedness and Response Summit held on April 17, 2007 at the Cultural Center of Laguna, this municipality.
The summit, which was attended by various municipal agriculture officers, health officers, poultry/duck raisers, exotic bird breeders from all over Laguna, aims to provide more information on bird flu or avian influenza in order to prepare the general public with a better understanding of the virus, its effects and preventions. It also aims to effectively disseminate information on how to minimize, confine and restrict the contagion in the event the virus has gained entry in the province.
Governor Teresita "Ningning" S. Lazaro leads guest speakers which include Dr. Samuel B. Animas, Chief, Animal Health Division, Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) who dealt on the Overview of Avian Influenza and Update on the Avian Influenza Situation; Mr. Nelson Castillo, OIC, IEC- AI, Protected Animals and Wilfdlife Bureau (PAWB)- DENR talked about the Role of Migratory Waterbirds in the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus (HPAIV) and what DENR is doing?; Dr. Alsaneo F. Lagos, Provincial Health Officer and Dr. Michael L. Cortez, Veterinarian IV, OPV presented the Provincial Avian Influenza Protection Plan.
In her short speech, Gov. Lazaro enjoined all present to unite and be vigilant in preventing the entry of the virus in order to keep Laguna bird flu free.
Meanwhile, Dr. Michael L. Cortez, Veterinarian IV- OPV, stated that his office had collected blood and gloacal sample of chicken and ducks and other fowls from various raisers in Laguna for testing which all turned out to be negative. He added that a simulation activity (outbreak containment) will be conducted sooner. Another sample collection will be undertaken province-wide on April 25 to May 25 to ensure that our province is 100% bird flu-free. (PIA/Alorti) [top]
