GSIS opens 2007 painting competition

BUTUAN CITY (April 19) -- Wanted! Painting enthusiasts and wannabe painters as the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) opens the 2007 GSIS Painting Competition.

The event, in cooperation with the Art Association of the Philippines, is in line with the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the GSIS and the National Heritage Month. All interested Filipino students and artists are invited to join the competition.

This year's theme "Sa Bansang Pilipinas, Kagandaha'y Likas" focus on the beauty of Philippine environment and its natural resources. The competition is expected to gather interpretations and renditions of "beauty" as seen by the Filipino artists.

The competition is open to all Filipino students and artists who are 18 years old and above. Participants in the student category are required to present their current school ID and a photocopy of his or her ID upon registration with a certification from the Head of Chairman of their school. On the other hand, participants in the professional category are required to present one valid ID upon registration.

Participants must also attach 1x1 ID picture and only one entry per participant will be accepted. No participation fee will be collected. Application forms are available in all GSIS offices and Art Association of the Philippines offices (AAP). Submission of artwork entries will be on Saturday, April 28, 2007 from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm. Entries submitted before or after the stated time and date shall not be accepted.

The required size of the painting is three feet by four feet with ten kilos allowable maximum weight. Acceptable medium is only oil on canvas, acrylic or watercolor in any style. The entry must hang on a wall to qualify. Appropriate frames or equivalent devices should be placed ready for hanging.

All entries must be dated not earlier than 2007, must be his or her original work, and must not have been exhibited before or revised or awarded a prize in another contest. All entries must be properly labeled at the back, indicating the artist name, address and contact numbers; title of the work; medium; size; year and price.

A 5"x7" colored photo of the work must be submitted with the same information written at the back of the painting. All entries must be signed. But signature will be covered with a masking tape during the judging.

The GSIS museum reserves the right to use the name and photo of the artist and his or her entry for free in any broadcast or print medium. The artist also grants GSIS the right to exhibit the entries as deemed fit. GSIS reserves the right to decide which of the entries will be displayed during the competition exhibition.

Judges may decide not to award prizes if the entries do not meet certain artistic and competition requirements. All decisions of the board of judges shall be final. Announcement and awarding of grand finalists will be on Friday, May 25, 2007 at 6:00 pm at the GSIS Theater.

Cash awards for the grand finalists in the professional category is P300,000 for the first prize; P200,000 for the second prize and P100,000 for the third prize. Five juror's choices will also be selected and each will receive P25,000.

For the student category, the first prize will be P150,000, P120,000 for the second prize and P100,000 for the third prize. Again five juror's choices will be selected and each will receive P20,000.

All Prize Winning Entries will automatically become properties of the GSIS and be included in the GSIS Art Collections. The Juror's Choices will remain properties of the artists.

All none winning entries will be offered for sale to the general public subject to a 30 percent commission for the AAP to support their programs and projects.

All possible care will be taken for the entries submitted. However, the GSIS Museum assumes no responsibility for any loss or damage to the entries before or after the competition.

All none winning entries must be retrieved by the participants or their designated representatives starting June 15 until July 31, 2007. Unclaimed artworks after this date will become properties of the GSIS. Officers of AAP are not allowed to participate in the said competition. (PIA-13) [top]
