Free training for Iloilo domestic workers on
Iloilo City (20 April) -- The New Lucena Polytechnic College in the municipality of New Lucena, Iloilo will offer free skills training and assessment for Filipino workers who seek to be employed as household service workers (HSWs) abroad for the first time starting May 2, 2007.
This was confirmed by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority 6 (TESDA 6) Director Buen Mondejar to the Philippine Information Agency recently.
The NLPC is one of the 13 Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) training institutions (TTIs) all over the country identified by TESDA that will offer these free training and assessment.
Labor and Employment Secretary Arturo Brion commended the TTIs for the move as the free training and assessment dispel accusations that the reform package on the deployment of HSWS is being implemented to exact profit from HSWs.
This new policy on the training of household services is being implemented by the government as part of its efforts directed towards better standards, welfare and protection for Filipino women working overseas. Under the new reform package, HSWs who failed the assessment three times are required to undergo training.
Brion said more TTIs are expected to offer free HSW training by the end of the month as TESDA have been exerting efforts to expand the provision of free training for HSWs. The free assessment and training can be availed of once by the trainee.
The other TTIs which were identified to offer free HSW training and assessment in the Visayas area are: Arteche National Agricultural School in Arteche, Eastern Samar; Balangiga National Agricultural School in Balangiga, Eastern Samar; and Samar National School of Arts & Trades in Taft, Eastern Samar.
HSWs who are interested to avail of the free training and assessment may inquire at the nearest regional office of TESDA in their area or at the TESDA Women Center in Taguig City at Tel. Nos. 818-8062 and 817-2651. (PIA) [top]
