TU readies pro-environment legislation

by ES Subong

Iloilo City (23 April) -- In an Earth Day statement, Team Unity senatorial candidates said they are formulating a package of pro-environment legislation after the May 14 elections, which will have the funding, intent and scope of a mini Marshall Plan for the Philippine environment.

TU spokesman Ace Durano said the plan draws from the collective experiences of the individual candidates, covering forestry, marine, air, and land resources.

Durano said the TU is committed to actively participate in the process of healing and nurturing the abused natural resources.

He also said that the anchor of this environmental program package is a crackdown on illegal logging and an "ambitious tree planting program, which is expected to get the support of multilateral stakeholders.

Among the major areas of concentration are the critical watershed areas to keep them in a healthy state, for a sustained potable water supply, water for irrigation and water for the multi-purpose dams.

Durano added that the program will also deal with air, land and sea pollution, which when not attended will result to illnesses and other hazards, which in turn will drain government's resources.

Ha also said these efforts will be supported by pro-administration coalition, as well as these will be tied up with affiliates and allies in other countries. (PIA 6) [top]
