Gov't holds simultaneous breastfeeding nationwide on May 2
Cebu City (23 April) -- In order to promote the advantages of exclusive breastfeeding, the Department of Health (DOH) is planning to institutionalize simultaneous breastfeeding nationwide in an activity dubbed 'Sabay-Sabay, Sumuso sa Nanay!Year 2: Attempt at 1st Guinness World Record on Simultaneous Breastfeeding in Multiple Sites."
The activity slated on May 2 will have the daycare centers under the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), churches and hospitals as the official sites for the activity.
On May 2, all breastfeeding mothers and children must register at the official sites from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. while the simultaneous breastfeeding will be done at 10:00 in the morning.
Advocates of breastfeeding, health, consumer rights, environmental protection, women empowerment, natural parenting, human rights and peace-loving Filipinos are also urged to assist in the information dissemination campaign drive on this particular activity.
In Central Visayas, the DOH-7 is set to hold an orientation on the activity later this week for specific guidelines and the identified sites for the four provinces of the region.
Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life is an important factor that can prevent childhood morbidity and mortality while the activity may serve as a kick-off for the revival and strengthening of the Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and the Breastfeeding Program of the Health Department.
The Philippines broke the Guinness Book of World Record for simultaneous breastfeeding in a single site last year when the country was able to mobilize 3,541 mothers to breastfeed in Manila. The previous record was held by the United States in Berkeley, California with 1,130 mothers in 2002.
This year's event aims to make the simultaneous breastfeeding a yearly event. (PIA-Cebu/FCR) [top]
