Maguindanao evacuees return home

Koronadal, South Cotabato (24 April) -- Some 1,000 families displaced by the recent skirmishes between warring politicians in Panalungan Maguindanao have started returning to their respective places of origin after an amicable settlement was reached between the Matalam and Montawal families.

One of the agreements forged by the two parties said that Montawal agreed to return the evacuees to their respective villages provided that no armed men loyal to Matalam would be stationed there.

Datu Norodin Matalam was a former Vice Governor of Maguindanao and presently the vice mayor of Pagalungan who is running for municipal mayor of the said town.

On the other hand, Datu Makabangen Montawal is the present mayor of the same town.

The son of Montawal is running for the mayoralty post of the said town under the KAMPI Party while Norodin Matalam is also running for mayor of the same town under the LAKAS Party. (MCD/PIA 12) [top]
