Comelec tags Zambo Norte most challenging place in May polls
Dipolog City (24 April) -- Region 9 Commission on Elections (Comelec) regional director Atty. Helen Aguila-Flores has recently disclosed that "Zamboanga del Norte is the most challenging place in the region" this coming elections.
Flores based her assessment on the personalities running for public office, saying "there are now new players joining the political exercise in the province."
Referring the "new players" to the two retired police generals running for elective post, Flores said "this is only unique to Zamboanga del Norte", as old politicians are the ones vying for political posts in other provinces or places in the region.
The two retired police generals are Rene Elumbaring and Pospero Noble who are both running for a congressional seat in the first and third districts of the province, respectively. Both run under the LAKAS-Christian-Muslim Democrats party.
"We are expecting the election here to be more tense compared with the past," said Flores without elaborating.
Flores also identified the municipalities of La Libertad, Sibuco and Sirawai as probable election hotspots. She, however, said that her office would have the counting of ballots from these municipalities centralized to protect the teachers and prevent armed groups from intimidating them.
In the meantime, Flores is urging all the candidates to just observe the elections laws to make the May 14, 2007 elections peaceful and credible. (PIA) [top]
