16 upland Antique barangays spearhead Earth Day celebration

by PS Mabaquiao

San Jose, Antique (24 April) -- Residents of sixteen (16) upland barangays covered by Sibalom Natural Park spearheaded the celebration of "Earth Day 2007" with the national theme" Stewardship in Action. "

Presidential Proclamation No. 553 mandates that April 22 of each year should be observed as International Earth Day to inculcate human awareness in the preservation of environment in order to sustain life and bio-diversities on this Mother Earth.

Employees of the National and Provincial agencies together with the residents of the 16 upland barangays went up the foot of Mt. Porras beneath Mao-it River where lush green trees and colorful gemstones abound and hold a short program.

Governor Salvacion Z. Perez who was celebrating her birthday on the same day said in her message that she is committed to implement laws and programs that will protect and save mother earth. "As mother of this province, it is incumbent in me to protect Mother Earth for the generations to come," Perez said.

The President who also designated the 22nd of April of every year as Earth Day in the Philippines directed the Department of Education " to incorporate subjects dealing with global warming and climate change in the public school science curriculum subjects."

"We want our young to be aware of global warming and other climate change phenomena," the President said.

The campaign for this year's celebration is for Clean Air, Clean Water, Water Security, Sustainable Resource Extraction, Biodiversity Conservation, Climate Change Reversal and Garbage Free Communities. "We encourage everyone to be responsible stewards of the resources of this Earth to ensure younger generations will still enjoy clean and safe environment" said Vivian Barillo, Officer In Charge of the ENRO.

Sibalom Natural Park has a total land area of 5,511.450 hectares covering huge Mt. Porras and vast agricultural lands. It was declared Natural Park way back in April 2000 as a component of National Integrated Protected Areas System or Republic Act 7586. (PIA) [top]
