PIA Press Release

PIA unites info officers

By Marivic Alcober

Tacloban City (24 April) -- To positively answer the national government's call for a more cohesive and more responsive government network of mass media, there is a need to ensure effective coordination between and among regional line agencies and government-owned and/or controlled corporations (GOCCs) in the region.

Along this line, the Regional Development Council passed Resolution No. 14 s. 2007 endorsing the proposal of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) through its Regional Director Erlinda Olivia P. Tiu, to organize the information officers of all regional line agencies of the government including GOCCs.

Under this resolution, RDC acknowledged that the PIA is empowered to disseminate development-oriented information through government and private media outlets.

As a result of this resolution and as a mandate coming from Secretary Conrado Limcaoco of PIA and all media groups, Dir. Tiu invited the Information Officers of the different entities in the region to an organizational meeting on April 24,2007 at the PIA regional office.

The main purpose of the organizational meeting of the different government agencies is for all government agencies to have a common message of good governance.

According to Dir. Tiu, "It is important for us to be able to share our ides, to strengthen the message of the different government offices relative to their programs and projects through the media, which should be understandable to the general public". She further emphasized that "Government message should always be centered on the message of good governance and to use the most effective medium, so that the message will reach the people in the hinterlands."

During the meeting, which was participated in by majority of our government off ices in the region, the Information Officers introduced themselves individually and elected among them its officers.

The Association of Government Information Officers-8 or AGIO-8 was then created with Myles Colasito of the Department of Interior & Local Government elected as president.

Other elected officials were Lemuel Montes of the Department of Trade & Industry as Vice-President: Purificacion Daluos of the Department of Environment & Natural Resources as Secretary: and Juvy Lobedica of the Department of Budget & Management as Treasurer.

Members of the Board are: PSupt. Cesario Darantinao of the Philippine National Police: Vina Aquino of the Department of Social Welfare & Development: Marissa Nicolasora of the Department of Health: Ma. Shiela Baluran of the National Maritime Polytechnic: and lastly Lysander Navales of the Civil Service Commission.

Director Tiu expressed her gratitude in behalf of PIA, to all the regional heads for sending in their Information Officers to the meeting. This only shows that the regional heads realize the value of communications plan in every government project or program. (PIA-8) [top]
