Sports has no finish line, says PSC chair

by Rolly Visaya, Efren Villarina and Doming Siloterio

Koronadal City (25 April) -- "Sports has no finish line, it equalize people" this according to Philippine Sports Commission Chair William I. Ramirez in his keynote address during the 2007 Palarong Pambansa grand opening ceremony here, yesterday.

Amid the cheers of the huge crowd assembled at South Cotabato Sports Complex, Ramirez, citing United Nation advocacy said "Physical Education and Sports development is as basic as health care and shelter."

Our Constitution also mandates that we should create a healthy citizenry thru physical education and sports activities, Ramirez said.

Palarong Pambansa is a picture of strength and hope of one genuine grassroots program.

It is the source of talents, of values that will create a strong state of nationhood which is the missing link today, Ramirez said.

"Athletes and students must learn to be confident, discipline, sportsmanship, composure in spite of adversities and try to understand that life is full of contradiction - sometimes you win and sometimes you loss," the Commissioner told the competing athletes adding "Sports develop good character and conduct."

In welcoming the delegates South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance Fuentes said: "We hope we will not only see a contest of physical prowess but a sharing of sisterhood and brotherhood." Adding "We hope you will take time to visit various places in South Cotabato and Socsargen and test the hospitality of our people."

Host Koronadal City Mayor Fernando Q. Miguel has prepared cultural presentations led by world class choreographers and artistic directors displaying the best in field demonstrations to the tune of heart pounding rendition of traditional music instruments.

A 30 minute breath taking display of fireworks capped the opening ceremony. (PIA 12) [top]
