Davao City (25 April) -- IGACOS is ready for the Inter-Province Chess Tournament and is capable of staging such big national tournament in chess.
This was the assurance made to us by Boy Tan, president of the Igacos Chess Club of the Island Garden City of Samal.
He made the assurance during an informal meeting with Engr. Allan Diez, chairman of the grassroots development committee of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in the Davao Region.
The chess club has also their own potentials of future national masters considering the great interest in chess shown by the island residents.
We are confident that the number of chess players there will grow as the new city grows. Igacos now is in the midst of celebrating an exciting festival called the "Karacoles" a festival of shells that is rated as one of the top three festivals in Mindanao.
In fact the Igacos Chess Club with a total of 117 members already is a lot bigger than the Davao Chess Club, Inc. Although base on population and ratio, Davao City has a greater number of chess players and enthusiasts. All of Mindanao at this point in time is estimated to have a total of 10,000 chess players.
Boy Tan was with us in that meeting with National Master Reggie Olay while waiting for the supposed arrival of NCFP president Butch Pichay who was busy campaigning in Davao City and was unable to be at the Davao Chess Club turf of National Master Sammy Yu to grace the opening round of a children chess tournament last Sunday.
Yu has thrown his full support to the senatorial candidacy of Pichay noting the NCFP president's interest in promoting chess in Mindanao.
Meanwhile, our football team will test its mettle in the National Men's Senior in Bacolod City this week. Even if they will survive versus the highly rated NCR (National Capital Region) team of Metro Manila they will still be facing the tough teams in the land of the brave Ilongos.
Members of the team are: Danny Boy Fernandez, Allan Rey Fernandez, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Jerome Ferdinand Balaga, Clifford Dacera, Jayric Iligan, Richard Encarnacion, Darryl Floyd Bantayan, Jason Mortillero, Sylvestre Sarco, Deneb Lee Edoc, Sandro Balderas, Angelo John Adana, Joey Arobo, Candao Laguilayan, Guillermo Alcontin and Glenn Bulaquiña with coaches David Dwight Peñano and Noel Presto and team referee: Christian Ea.
The national championship is participated in by the top 8 teams in the Philippines namely, Cagayan de Oro, Baguio, Iloilo and Negros in group A and Davao, NCR, M'lang and Masbate for group B. Top two of each group will meet in the Semi-finals on Saturday, April 28, 2007.
DFA Advisory: "The Davao team left Friday night in their quest to re-gain its place in the National Men's Senior. Their training finally paid off when they hurdled the challenges in both South Mindanao and All Mindanao qaulifiers. They have been training since last quarter of 2006. Head coach David Peñano believes that the team is fit enough to battle through Philippine's football giants." (PIA) [top]
