Oro Chamber prepares for forum on economic policy study

Cagayan de Oro City (26 April) -- The Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) today came to an agreement with the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) and the National Economic & Development Authority (NEDA) Region 10 Office to jointly organize and conduct a discussion forum on "ASEAN plus China: Opportunities and Threats".

During this event, two new PIDS studies will be presented to various stakeholders from the government, academe, business and private sector. These studies are "Economic and Social Effects of Agriculture Liberalization Under the China-ASEAN FTA: A Case Study from the Philippines" and "Should Southeast Asia Fear the Chinese Juggernaut? The View from the Philippines."

"We are pleased to partner with the Oro Chamber. We see it as the most logical collaborator in this information dissemination because of its role as a socio-economic coordinator among the business and private sector," said Ms. Jennifer P.T. Liguton, Director of the Research Information Staff of the PIDS. She came to Cagayan de Oro with her team from the PIDS, which is based in Makati City.

"We have been working with PIDS and we believe that their studies must be disseminated where it could be most useful. And this forum is just on time, seeing the economic revolution of China and its effect to our country," stated NEDA-10 Regional Director Casimira V. Balandra.

On the part of Oro Chamber, the organization welcomes the chance to be the co-host of the discussion forum of the economic studies. "This means that Cagayan de Oro City is now rightfully acknowledged as a key business area. The discussion forum here in our city will serve for the whole Mindanao, and we shall ensure that invitations to this event will reach the other business organizations all over Mindanao," commented Oro Chamber Secretary General Heidi Grace P. Mendoza.

"With Oro Chamber's objective of providing timely information to our members and the business community, we look forward to optimizing the benefits of this event for them," Mendoza added.

Cagayan de Oro City and the Northern Mindanao area had been identified as a major area for Philippine competitiveness with the ASEAN and China. Local leaders and industry players shall be providing reaction statements to each of the studies after the presentation by the authors. Feedback shall also be solicited from the participants of the forum.

The discussion forum is slated on June 20, 2007 at the Pearlmont Inn, Cagayan de Oro City. For inquiries, please call up the Oro Chamber office at 856-3764. (OroChamber) [top]
