PPCRV advocates CHAMP elections in Sulu

Zamboanga City (April 26) -- Comelec Commissioner Rene V. Sarmiento and Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible voting (PPCRV) Chairperson Henrietta de Villa visited Sulu to advocate for clean, honest, accurate, meaningful and peaceful (CHAMP) elections in the province.
CHAMP is the election advocacy battle cry of PPCRV.
To erase doubts that cheating is massive in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), volunteers from 12 youth and women organizations in Sulu will be tapped by PPCRV to monitor the election proceedings.
ARMM COMELEC Regional Director Atty. Rey Sumalipao who assisted Commissioner Sarmiento in the Sulu visit, hopes dislocated families who are temporarily housed in school buildings due to the on-going conflict will then be back in their houses in time for the May 14 elections.
The COMELEC will somehow be forced to put up makeshift shelters near school buildings housing dislocated families to serve as polling places, or use barangay and health centers and police stations for the purpose, Sumalipao added.
In preparation for the mid-year elections, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has issued Proclamation No. 1279 declaring Monday, May 14, as a special public (non-working) holiday nationwide "to give the people the fullest opportunity to exercise their right of suffrage" during the national and local elections on that day.
In the proclamation, the President noted that "Monday, May 14, 2007, should be declared a special public (non-working) holiday to give the people the fullest opportunity to exercise their right of suffrage." (PIA-ZC) [top]
