PDEA going against graft and corruption

by Lovely Laudette D. Gamba

BUTUAN CITY (April 27) -- "We are not only going after illegal drug trafficking but graft and corruption as well". This is the statement of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 13 Regional Director Glenn Dela Torre in an interview with media, recently.

With this, PDEA has implemented the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PAGC) Integrity, Development Action Plan (IDAP). This is among the major thrust of PDEA Battle Plan for 2007 to 2010.

IDAP is President Gloria Magapal-Arroyo's program to counter corruption through integrity development and good governance.

Precisely, the office is taking on this program through personnel capability build-up. This started by hiring competent and incorruptible PDEA agents and technical personnel who can work round the clock.

Education of PDEA personnel on laws enacted to punish those who practice graft and corruption in any government offices and provision of incentives in the form of rewards and awards are few of the innovations implemented by the office in relation to IDAP.

The Agency also practice transparency in physical and financial matters to ensure graft-free operation. PDEA also put up a court watch project to ensure the successful prosecution of drug cases in the region and the filing of appropriate charges against persons responsible for bungling drug cases.

PDEA hopes that these initiatives will help combat graft and corruption leading to a more efficient and cost effective anti-illegal drugs campaign across the country. (PIA-13) [top]
