Kasuy Day set in Palawan's Roxas town
Puerto Princesa City (27 April) -- The town of Roxas in Palawan declares May 10 as Kasuy Day to drumbeat its celebration launching cashew as its One Town, One Product (OTOP).
The one day celebration, a first of its kind in the province, will highlight the contribution of the product in the development of the town. Roxas is the biggest producer of cashew in Palawan with 1,161,576 fruit-bearing trees producing an average of 13,938 metric tons of nuts.
The celebration also focuses on Barangay San Miguel, the town's production village and Malcampo, the processing village. Roxas is a step ahead in the development of the cashew industry in the province.
Another first is the Parabilogan Challenge, a unique contest in search of the most number of decorticated cashew nut produced at the shortest time possible by local farmers. The project, chaired by the local agriculturist office will also feature the best cashew products and exhibits by the local government.
The Department of Trade & Industry in partnership with the local government will formally launch cashew as the town's OTOP in a simple ceremony together with the opening of a pasalubong center in the municipal compound.
Cashew is the major OTOP of the province of Palawan which produces almost ninety percent of the supply of the entire country.
One Town, One Product is a priority program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to promote local entrepreneurship and job creation. (PIA) [top]
