Basilan's Isabela City turns 6

Isabela City, Basilan (27 April) -- The City Government of Isabela in Basilan turned six years old as a component city last April 25 in a manner what City Mayor Rodolfo Tan described as “simple and modest celebration.”
“Although this year celebration is not as colorful and pompous as compared with the previous year, it is our desire to observe this memorable day with simplicity and with modesty, but with utmost solemnity and gratitude to the lord for bestowing the Isabelenos the good life we are enjoying and experiencing today”, said Mayor Rodolfo Y. Tan during his message to all employees of the city government of Isabela and to Isabelenos as he spearheaded the 6th Founding anniversary of this year’s COCOWAYAN Festival.
The two day celebration that commenced in the morning of April 24 with its traditional Mass Wedding participated by 183 couple held at the city gymnasium. This is an annual activity of the City Government held every Cocowayan Festival that provides couples with free marriage license.
During this occasion, the couples are also provided with free reception and cash gift of P1,000 each. In the afternoon, the Mayor together with City Councilors, heads of offices and other representatives proceeded in the blessing and inauguration of various projects in the different barangays of the city, namely: construction of waiting shed, concreting of roads and drainage canal in Port Area barangay; repair of perimeter fence of multi-purpose hall in Busay barangay; concreting of roads at Bliss Lanote barangay; construction of concrete fence at Sunset barangay and concreting of roads at Lazaro Drive, Sunrise barangay.
On April 25, foundation day, a Thanksgiving Mass at the Isabela City Hall lobby started the activity of the day, followed with outdoor parlor games and other contests that were mostly participated in by City Government employees.
At mid-day, a short program was also prepared for the awarding of City Government employees whose services in the government incurred 30 years and above. Some 37 awardees were provided with plaques of appreciation and cash incentives as mandated in the Civil Service law.
Moreover, Deputy Speaker for Mindanao, Congressman Abdulgani “Gerry” A. Salapuddin was also conferred with plaque of Recognition for his significant contribution in the City of Isabela as the “Father of the Cityhood of Isabela”, and for being the proponents of Republic Act 9023, that converts Isabela into a component City and signed into law on April 25, 2001. Other awardees are Reynaldo B. Randa, Provincial Director of the Civil Service Commission, for his promotion of Human Resource Development Program in the City Government of Isabela; and City Councilor Nida P. Dans as Regional Outstanding Lady Executive.
Meanwhile, the Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution requesting Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to declare every April 25 as special non-working holiday. (FIS/PIA-BASULTA) [top]
